How do I check my overtime on my payslip?
Find the period and labelled rows
An overtime check connects the hours and rates printed on your payslip to its earnings amounts. Write the pay period dates and currency on paper. Copy the rows labelled overtime, including hours, units, rate and amount where shown. Keep ordinary hours, allowances and other earnings on separate lines. Retain the original labels so the calculation can be checked against the same source.

Put your dated time record beside the payslip. Add the hours in the matching period and compare them with the overtime units shown. If your record uses hours and minutes, convert minutes to a fraction of an hour: 30 minutes is 0.5 hours. Note any date that falls outside the payslip period. A difference in periods can explain why two hour totals cover different work.
Multiply the printed figures
For each overtime line with an hourly rate, multiply its hours by its listed rate. Compare the result with the line amount and write any difference beside it. If the payslip instead shows a base rate and a multiplier, copy both before multiplying them together. Use only figures present in your records; this calculation checks their arithmetic rather than determining which rate applies.
Example: made-up figures
Imagine an overtime row showing 4 hours at 30 per hour. Multiplication gives 120. A separate overtime row shows 2 hours at 40 per hour, giving 80. Together the rows contain 6 hours and 200 in earnings. If ordinary earnings are 800 and there are no other earnings rows, the combined gross amount is 1,000. These fictional figures illustrate the addition only.
Keep gross and take-home figures distinct
Add the checked overtime amounts into a separate subtotal. Compare the total earnings rows with the gross pay printed on the payslip. Copy deductions separately when tracing the printed take-home amount; overtime earnings and take-home pay describe different totals. Keep each page and time-record date beside your working. The finished sheet shows the printed hours, rates and arithmetic, with any unmatched hours or amounts clearly identified.
